Whether you’re driving a diesel workhorse or a light-duty daily driver, your truck’s fuel economy can take a hit without warning. If you’re filling up more often and going fewer miles, you’re not imagining things. Fuel economy loss is a common problem we see at Beyer Motorsports in Cedar Falls and it’s often easier to fix than people think.
Here are five reasons your MPG might be dropping and how to fix them.
Tires that are low on air or mismatched in size create rolling resistance that forces your engine to work harder. The result? Lower fuel efficiency and uneven wear.
Fix it: Check your tire pressure regularly and make sure all tires are properly matched and aligned. Seasonal changes can affect pressure levels more than you’d expect.
Your truck needs clean fuel and fresh air to run efficiently. A clogged fuel or air filter limits that flow and causes your engine to compensate by using more fuel.
Fix it: Replace filters according to your maintenance schedule. It’s a quick and inexpensive way to recover lost MPG.
Fuel injectors control how much fuel is sprayed into your engine and even a slight clog can throw things off. When injectors get dirty or begin to fail, you’ll notice power loss and increased fuel usage.
Fix it: Have your injectors tested and cleaned. Our certified techs can run diagnostics to pinpoint the issue and get your truck running clean again.
Your oxygen sensor and mass airflow sensor help regulate the fuel-to-air mix. If either of these fails, your truck could use far more fuel than necessary without setting off a warning light.
Fix it: A diagnostic scan can detect faulty sensors before they cause bigger problems. Replacing a bad sensor can instantly improve fuel efficiency.
It might not be mechanical at all. Towing a heavier load than usual, more stop-and-go traffic, or driving aggressively can all affect MPG.
Fix it: Evaluate your current load, route, and driving style. Even reducing idle time can make a big difference over the course of a month.
Losing fuel mileage isn’t just frustrating, it costs real money. If your truck doesn’t seem to be running as efficiently as it should, let Beyer Motorsports run a full diagnostic and inspection. We specialize in fuel systems, diesel performance, and overall truck efficiency.
